CMD
Temporomandibular joint function therapy
Should you visit the dentist for head and neck pain?
Yes, because an incorrect bite may be the cause.
Many adults suffer from various pain symptoms in the mouth, jaw, and facial area, but also from headaches or pain that extends beyond the head and whose cause you would not initially associate with your masticatory system, e.g., neck tension, back pain, shoulder pain, or hip problems. However, very few of those affected have thought to talk to their dentist about it.
The cause of many pain symptoms, including chronic ones, is a disturbance in the interaction between the upper and lower jaw and the masticatory muscles. Tension in the masticatory muscles can easily spread to the cervical and lumbar spine and into the pelvic area. The transmission of pain signals to the nervous system can lead to neurophysiological reactions and thus to chronic pain.
These chewing disorders – known as CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction) – are caused by the chewing surfaces not fitting together perfectly, e.g. due to misaligned teeth, tooth extractions, poorly fitting dentures, braces or injuries.

Another advantage of the functional splint is that it prevents wear and tear on individual teeth or dentures caused by excessive strain.
Prosthetic restoration is carried out after the function has been corrected. The splint is worn until the desired position of the teeth or your therapeutic bite is achieved and stable. Only then are any necessary corrections, replacement of fillings or planning for high-quality implant work carried out.
